nyxt README

The project's README from github.com/atlas-engineer/nyxt. As one markdown file: README.md.

#+html:

Nyxt [nýkst] is a keyboard-driven web browser designed for hackers. Inspired by Emacs and Vim, it has familiar keybindings ([[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emacs][Emacs]], [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vim_(text_editor)][vi]], [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_Common_User_Access][CUA]]), and is infinitely extensible in Lisp.

Attention: Nyxt is under active development. Please feel free to [[https://github.com/atlas-engineer/nyxt/issues][report]] bugs, instabilities or feature wishes.

** Fast tab switching

Switch easily between your open tabs via fuzzy search. If you are looking for https://www.example.com, you could type in ele, exa, epl, or any other matching series of letters.

#+html:

** Multiple marking

Commands can accept multiple inputs, allowing you to quickly perform an operation against multiple objects. In the example below we simultaneously open several bookmarks.

#+html:

** Powerful bookmarks

Bookmark a page with tags. Search bookmarks with compound queries. Capture more data about your bookmarks, and group and wrangle them in any way you like.

#+html:

** Multi tab search

Search multiple tabs at the same time, and view all the results in a single window. Jump quickly through your open tabs to find what you need.

#+html:

** History as a tree

History is represented as a tree that you can traverse. Smarter than the "forwards-backwards" abstraction found in other browsers, the tree makes sure you never lose track of where you've been.

Supported platforms:

** GNU/Linux

The Nyxt team maintains the following distribution means:

[[https://repology.org/project/nyxt/versions][Non-official distribution means are supported by the community as well]]. We're not accountable for their quality, so we kindly ask to report issues to the maintainers of those packaging efforts.

What is this?Nyxt [nýkst] is a keyboard-driven web browser designed for hackers — an independent, deeply customizable browser for people who'd rather type than click.
Is it a separate browser, or an extension for an existing one?A standalone browser you install on your machine — not an extension. Its keybindings deliberately follow Emacs and Vim, so they feel familiar if you've used either editor.
Do I need to know Lisp to use it day to day?No — daily browsing is just browsing, no code required. Lisp is what you reach for when you want to change or script behavior: the browser is infinitely extensible in it.
Can I run it on macOS or Windows yet?Not in finished form: macOS and Windows ports are in development, FreeBSD support is unofficial, and only GNU/Linux is ready today. The project is under active development, so expect rough edges.
How does switching between tabs work?Fuzzy search: type any series of letters matching a tab's title — for example.com, 'ele', 'exa' or 'epl' all match — and jump straight to it.
How does it handle browsing history? As a tree you can traverse. Instead of a flat forwards-backwards line, revisiting an old page opens a branch, so you never lose track of where you've been.
What's special about bookmarks? They work more like a small database: tag pages, search them with compound queries, capture extra data per bookmark, then group and wrangle the collection however you like.
Can one command act on several tabs or bookmarks at once?Yes — commands accept multiple inputs ('multiple marking'), for example opening several bookmarks simultaneously. Multi tab search also queries several tabs at once and shows all results in a single window.
