What is this?Gekko is a Bitcoin trading and backtesting platform that connects to popular Bitcoin exchanges — a trading bot written in JavaScript that runs on Node.js.
Is this an online service I sign up for, or software I run myself?Software you run yourself: an open-source (MIT) Node.js application for your own machine or server, which serves its own web UI in the browser.
How do I get it up and running?Follow the installing-Gekko guide on the documentation site, then start it with 'node ./gekko --config config.js --ui', which opens its web UI.
What do I need installed before it will run?Node.js 8.11.2 or newer — the whole bot is JavaScript. If you'd rather skip a local Node setup, the repo includes Docker and docker-compose files to run it in a container.
Is Gekko still maintained? No — the author has officially stopped maintaining it and the repo is archived. Community forks may live on, but this repository will not receive updates.
Which Bitcoin exchanges does it connect to?The README only promises support for popular Bitcoin exchanges without naming them. The code does bundle Bitfinex's API client (bitfinex-api-node), so Bitfinex works out of the box.
Is it safe to let it trade with real money? The author's disclaimer is blunt: 'Use Gekko at your own risk.' Development has also stopped, so you would be running unmaintained code against real funds — treat it as an experiment.
How does it actually decide when to buy and sell?It is built for TA — technical analysis: strategies trade on signals computed from market data. The exact strategy set isn't in the README; the documentation site covers it.
Is it free to use and modify?Yes — it is MIT-licensed open source, so running, studying and modifying it costs nothing. The author simply accepts BTC tips if Gekko helped you.
