Arduino README

The project's README from github.com/arduino/Arduino. As one markdown file: README.md.

Important Notice: This repository contains the legacy Arduino IDE 1.x, which is no longer in active development. For the latest features and updates, please visit the Arduino IDE 2.x repository. If you encounter issues related to the newer IDE, please report them there.

Arduino is an open-source physical computing platform based on a simple I/O board and a development environment that implements the Processing/Wiring language. Arduino can be used to develop stand-alone interactive objects or can be connected to software on your computer (e.g. Flash, Processing and MaxMSP). The boards can be assembled by hand or purchased preassembled; the open-source IDE can be downloaded for free at https://arduino.cc.

Contents of this repository

This repository contains just the code for the Arduino IDE itself. Originally, it also contained the AVR and SAM Arduino core and libraries (i.e. the code that is compiled as part of a sketch and runs on the actual Arduino device), but those have been moved into their own repositories. They are still automatically downloaded as part of the build process and included in built releases, though.

The repositories for these extra parts can be found here:

Building and testing

Instructions for building the IDE and running unit tests can be found on the wiki:

Arduino is an open-source project, supported by many. The Arduino team is composed of Massimo Banzi, David Cuartielles, Tom Igoe, and David A. Mellis.

Arduino uses GNU avr-gcc toolchain, GCC ARM Embedded toolchain, avr-libc, avrdude, bossac, openOCD, and code from Processing and Wiring.

What is this? This is the legacy Arduino IDE 1.x: the open-source desktop development environment for the Arduino physical computing platform, used to write sketches in the Processing/Wiring language and upload them to an Arduino I/O board.
Is this the Arduino board itself or the software for programming it?It is the software, not the hardware: this repository holds only the code for the Arduino IDE. The boards are separate pieces of hardware that you can assemble by hand or buy preassembled.
Do I need to install anything else to program a specific board?Yes - board support is separate from the IDE: the AVR core lives in its own ArduinoCore-avr repository, and cores for other boards are added through the built-in board manager.
Is this IDE still the one I should use?No - 1.x is legacy and no longer in active development. Arduino points users to the IDE 2.x repository for the latest features, and issues with the newer IDE should be reported there.
What can an Arduino board do once I have programmed it?It can run as a stand-alone interactive object, or stay connected to software on your computer such as Flash, Processing or MaxMSP.
What tools does the IDE use under the hood to build and upload sketches? It builds with the GNU avr-gcc and GCC ARM Embedded toolchains plus avr-libc, uploads via avrdude, bossac and openOCD, and also incorporates code from the Processing and Wiring projects.
