What is this?
WeUI is a UI library from WeChat's official design team: it gives mobile web pages the WeChat look-and-feel, with widgets styled like the WeChat app itself.
Is it a CSS stylesheet I drop in, or a JavaScript framework?
It is a set of HTML and CSS widgets, not a JavaScript framework — you copy the markup and styles into your mobile pages rather than code against an app framework.
How do I get it into my project?
Clone the repo, run npm install, then gulp build (npm start launches gulp -ws for development). If you just want to look first, the README links a mobile demo and a documentation Wiki.
What do I need installed to build or tweak it?
Node.js with gulp — build, test and lint are npm scripts (gulp build, stylelint for CSS). The output itself is plain HTML/CSS with no runtime dependencies.
Does it only make sense for pages opened inside WeChat?
It is tailor-made for WeChat web development: the widgets mirror WeChat's native UI so pages opened inside WeChat feel like part of the app. Outside it, you simply get a WeChat-styled mobile UI.
Which components come out of the box?
Button, cell, dialog, progress, toast, article, actionsheet and icon — the README calls them the most useful widgets and modules of mobile web applications.
Are there official variants for Mini Programs, WeCom or React?
Yes. The team maintains weui-wxss for Mini Programs, WeUI for Work (the WeCom edition), weui.js for interactive behavior, and react-weui for React apps.
Is the project still alive?
It has been developed under Tencent's GitHub since December 2014 and holds roughly 27.4k stars; the README invites issues and pull requests from anyone with ideas or suggestions.
Why did WeChat's design team build this at all?
To improve and standardize the experience for WeChat users: pages opened inside WeChat should look and behave like the app around them, and WeUI gives every developer the official components to do that.
