An open-source alternative frontend for YouTube which is efficient by design.

A list of public instances can be found at the documentation here.

The Problem

YouTube has an extremely invasive privacy policy which relies on using user data in unethical ways. You give them a lot of data - ranging from ideas, music taste, content, political opinions, and much more than you think.

By using Piped, you can freely watch and listen to content without the fear of prying eyes watching everything you are doing.

What is this?Piped is an open-source, privacy-friendly alternative frontend for YouTube: you watch and listen to content without ads, tracking, or any connections to Google's servers.
So is it a website I open in a browser, or something I install? It is a web app: you open a public instance in any browser, and PWA support lets you install it like an app. Viewers like LibreTube or Yattee are separate projects built on Piped.
How do I start watching with it?Open one of the public instances listed in the documentation — no install needed. To make YouTube links open in Piped automatically, add the Piped-Redirects, Libredirect or Predirect extension.
Do I need to create an account anywhere? No — you can watch without an account. Instances offer optional login with feeds and playlists, and preferences are stored locally in your browser.
Does everything from YouTube work there?Mostly, with caveats: geo-restrictions are bypassed only 'if possible' via the federated network, and since official YouTube APIs are skipped, it relies on NewPipeExtractor keeping up with YouTube.
Can I run my own instance instead of depending on public ones?Yes — self-hosting is supported and documented, and the repo ships a Dockerfile. Instances collaborate through a federated protocol on Matrix, and the design targets thousands of concurrent users.
What does it change about Google's tracking?Nothing goes to Google: no ads, no tracking, no connections to Google's servers, and your preferences stay saved locally. Piped skips official YouTube APIs entirely and extracts data with NewPipeExtractor instead.
What player and account features does it have?4K and audio-only playback, infinite scrolling, light/dark themes, embedded video support, and an interface in many languages — plus login, feeds and playlists, with an option to stream over LBRY.
Are there apps for phones or for YouTube Music? The ecosystem covers that: LibreTube on Android, Yattee on macOS/iOS, Pipeline and PlasmaTube on Linux, Hyperpipe as a privacy front-end for YouTube Music, and ytify for audio streaming.
