ladybird README

The project's README from github.com/LadybirdBrowser/ladybird. As one markdown file: README.md.

Ladybird

Ladybird is a truly independent web browser, using a novel engine based on web standards.

[!IMPORTANT] Ladybird is in a pre-alpha state, and only suitable for use by developers

Features

We aim to build a complete, usable browser for the modern web.

Ladybird uses a multi-process architecture with a main UI process, several WebContent renderer processes, an ImageDecoder process, and a RequestServer process.

Image decoding and network connections are done out of process to be more robust against malicious content. Each tab has its own renderer process, which is sandboxed from the rest of the system.

At the moment, many core library support components are inherited from SerenityOS:

How do I build and run this?

See build instructions for information on how to build Ladybird.

Ladybird runs on Linux, macOS, Windows (with WSL2), and many other *Nixes.

How do I read the documentation?

Code-related documentation can be found in the documentation folder.

What is this?Ladybird is a truly independent web browser built on its own novel engine designed around web standards.
Is it a finished browser I install, or an engine library I embed? It is a ready-to-use desktop browser application rather than an embeddable engine — the rendering engine and support libraries are its internal building blocks.
Can I download an installer, or do I have to build it?You build it from source: the README points to build instructions for each supported OS, and the repo's CI includes a Flatpak build template.
Is it ready for everyday browsing? No — Ladybird is in a pre-alpha state and only suitable for use by developers.
Which operating systems does it run on?Linux, macOS, and Windows (with WSL2), plus many other Nixes.
What does its architecture look like?It is multi-process: a main UI process, one sandboxed renderer process per tab, plus separate ImageDecoder and RequestServer processes, so untrusted content stays isolated.
What does the engine stack include?Alongside LibWeb (rendering) and LibJS (JavaScript) it inherits SerenityOS libraries for WebAssembly, TLS, HTTP/1.1, 2D graphics, Unicode, audio/video playback and inter-process communication.
Can its engine libraries be reused in other projects?Yes — the code is under a 2-clause BSD license, so libraries like LibWeb and LibJS can be reused with attribution.
