What is this?
wangEditor is an open-source WYSIWYG rich text editor for the web, currently at version 5. It is built to work out of the box with simple configuration.
Is it a component I add to my own web app, or a hosted editor service?
It is a frontend library you embed in your own pages: you add the editor component and configure it in your code. There is no hosted service involved.
How do I get it into my project?
Install it from npm and follow the quick-start in the documentation linked from the README; a live demo is linked too, so you can try the editor in a browser before installing anything.
Do I need Vue or React to use it, or does plain JavaScript work?
Plain JavaScript is enough — the core editor works on its own, and there are official integrations for Vue and React if your app uses one of them.
Where does it actually run — do I need anything beyond a browser?
It runs in the browser as part of a web page, so it works wherever your web app runs. There is no desktop or mobile app to install.
How mature is the project — is it actively used?
It has been around since 2014 and is one of the most-starred Chinese open-source editor projects (over 18k GitHub stars), now at major version 5.
Is the documentation in English or Chinese?
Primarily Chinese — the README opens with an English heading but its content is Chinese, and the docs and demo it links to target a Chinese-speaking audience. The editor itself is language-agnostic.
Which topics is it in?
