What is this?
Trojan is a censorship-circumvention proxy — an 'unidentifiable mechanism' built to get your traffic across China's Great Firewall (GFW).
It calls itself an 'idea' rather than a program — what does that mean?
There is no single fixed protocol to name: the idea is to imitate the most common internet service so closely that your traffic behaves identically to it and is never identified.
How do I get it running?
The wiki has installation guides for various platforms, plus online documentation; with Docker you can deploy it as a container instead of building from source.
Will my ISP be able to detect or throttle this traffic?
That is what the design defends against: multiple protocols over TLS avoid both active and passive detection and ISP QoS throttling.
So is this an app I put on my devices, or something I run on a server?
You host it yourself: Trojan is a self-hosted proxy program written in C++ that you deploy on your own server, not a regular end-user app.
Why is it called Trojan?
The README quips: 'We are the GreatER Fire; we ship Trojan Horses.' Like the myth, the trick is smuggling your traffic inside something that looks completely ordinary.
Is the project still maintained?
The repository is not archived; it dates back to October 2017 and has close to 20,000 GitHub stars.
