Destiny 2 Offline Exploration Mod

This mod installs onto an old build of the game and allows you to play it offline, loading into destinations and exploring them.

Most gameplay features are not currently supported. (Missions, Enemies, NPCs, Quests, Persistent Saves, ...)

Features

WIP

This mod is a work in progress. Things might break or work in unexpected ways. There is also currently a lack of documentation. This will improve over the coming weeks.

Building

Windows

Install Visual Studio 2026 with the Desktop development with C++ workload. The project builds against the v145 toolset and the 10.0.26100 Windows SDK, so check that both are selected in the installer.

The easiest route is to open Sunrise.sln, select the Release x64 configuration and build.

To build from a command line, use the Developer PowerShell for VS 2026:

  1. Clone the repository
git clone https://github.com/stanuwu/Sunrise
cd Sunrise
  1. Build the solution
msbuild Sunrise.sln /m /p:Configuration=Release /p:Platform=x64

Linux

Make sure you have git, cmake, clang, ninja, llvm, and xwin installed.

  1. Clone the repository
$ git clone https://github.com/stanuwu/Sunrise
$ cd Sunrise
  1. Download Windows headers:
$ xwin --sdk-version 10.0.26100 --accept-license splat --include-debug-libs --output .xwin-cache
  1. Configure and build the project
$ cmake -B build -G Ninja -DCMAKE_TOOLCHAIN_FILE=$(pwd)/linux-to-win-toolchain.cmake -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release
$ cmake --build build

What is this?Sunrise is a mod that installs onto an old build of Destiny 2 and lets you play it offline, loading into destinations and exploring them without connecting to any servers.
Is this a full game replacement or just a mod for an existing install?It is a patch/mod applied to an old existing build of Destiny 2 that you must already own and provide yourself; it is not a crack, cheat, or custom server.
How do I build and install it?On Windows, install Visual Studio 2026 with the C++ desktop workload (v145 toolset, 10.0.26100 SDK), open Sunrise.sln and build the Release x64 configuration. On Linux, install git, cmake, clang, ninja, llvm and xwin, clone the repo, download the Windows headers, then configure and build.
What tools do I need to compile this from source?Windows requires Visual Studio 2026 with the C++ workload; Linux requires git, cmake, clang, ninja, llvm, and xwin. SQLite is listed as a dependency.
Does this support full gameplay like missions and quests?No, most gameplay features are not currently supported, including missions, enemies, NPCs, quests, and persistent saves. Matchmade activities are also currently broken.
Who is this for, and is it legal to use?It is aimed at players and researchers wanting to explore an old build of Destiny 2 offline; the author states it's not for profit, doesn't affect live servers, and includes no game data in releases to avoid copyright issues.
Does this mod connect to any online servers?No, it runs completely locally and does not connect to or provide any servers or services.
What can I actually do once it's installed?You can load into any game destination and explore it, with exploration helpers like fly and noclip, activity override, and basic inventory management.
Was AI used to build this mod?Yes, AI was used for reverse engineering, development, and documentation, but not for art or creative writing, and all publicly released AI work is human-reviewed.
How stable is the mod right now?It's explicitly a work in progress with a lack of documentation, so things might break or behave unexpectedly; this is expected to improve over time.
