Introduction to GitHub

Get started using GitHub in less than an hour.

Welcome

People use GitHub to build some of the most advanced technologies in the world. Whether you’re visualizing data or building a new game, there’s a whole community and set of tools on GitHub that can help you do it even better. GitHub Skills’ “Introduction to GitHub” exercise guides you through everything you need to start contributing in less than an hour.

In this exercise, you will:

  1. Create a branch
  2. Commit a file
  3. Open a pull request
  4. Merge your pull request

How to start this exercise

Simply copy the exercise to your account, then give your favorite Octocat (Mona) about 20 seconds to prepare the first lesson, then refresh the page.

Having trouble? 🤷

When copying the exercise, we recommend the following settings:

  • For owner, choose your personal account or an organization to host the repository.

  • We recommend creating a public repository, since private repositories will use Actions minutes.

If the exercise isn't ready in 20 seconds, please check the Actions tab.

  • Check to see if a job is running. Sometimes it simply takes a bit longer.

  • If the page shows a failed job, please submit an issue. Nice, you found a bug! 🐛

What is this?A hands-on GitHub Skills exercise that gets complete beginners using GitHub — repositories, branches, commits, and pull requests — in under an hour, all on github.com.
Is it a course I just read, or something hands-on?Hands-on: you work inside your own copy of the exercise repo, and GitHub Actions checks each step as you create real branches, commits, and a pull request.
How do I start the exercise?Copy the exercise to your GitHub account, wait about 20 seconds while Mona prepares the first lesson, then refresh the page. Pick a public repository — private ones spend Actions minutes.
Do I need to know Git before starting? No — prerequisites are none. It's aimed at new developers, new GitHub users, and students as a first-day introduction, and takes less than an hour.
What if the first lesson doesn't show up after copying?Check the Actions tab: a job may still be running — sometimes it just takes longer. If you see a failed job, report it by submitting an issue.
What is GitHub Skills? It's the official hands-on learning program this exercise belongs to; this course is the starting point that introduces repositories, branches, commits, and pull requests.
Who is Mona?GitHub's Octocat mascot — she prepares your first lesson about 20 seconds after you copy the exercise, and the Actions workflows guide you step by step from there.
Can an organization host the exercise instead of my personal account?Yes — when copying, you can choose either a personal account or an organization as the owner of the repository. A public repo is still recommended so you don't use Actions minutes.
