What is this?An MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that lets AI assistants control DaVinci Resolve Studio through the official Scripting API.
Is it a plugin inside Resolve, or a separate server?A separate MCP server that runs outside Resolve and drives it through Resolve's official Scripting API. A local browser control panel also ships with it for inspecting Resolve state and running analysis.
How do I get it installed and wired up?Run the npm launcher (npx davinci-resolve-mcp setup): it installs a managed copy and runs a Python installer that creates a venv, detects Resolve paths and configures your client. In Resolve Studio, first set Preferences > General > External scripting using to Local.
Which AI assistants and IDEs can it connect to?The installer can auto-configure Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Zed, Continue, Cline, Roo Code, OpenCode, Codex CLI and JetBrains IDEs.
Does it work with the free edition of Resolve, or do I need Studio?External scripting is Studio-only. The free edition works only through an in-app bridge script on Resolve 21.0.x; Resolve 21.1 moved Python scripting to Studio, so treat the bridge as a 21.0.x path.
Does it run on macOS, Windows and Linux? All three are confirmed: macOS was validated directly, Windows and Linux on user reports.
What can an assistant actually do once it is connected?Editing, media pool organization, render setup, review markers, grading, Fusion and Fairlight work, plus project lifecycle tasks, extension authoring and source-safe media analysis, with full API coverage.
Compound mode vs full mode, which one should I run?Compound (37 tools) is the default and groups related Resolve operations behind action parameters to keep context usage low. Full mode exposes 390 tools, one per API method, for power users; compound is recommended.
What is the advanced server for?An optional second, Node-based server that does what the scripting API cannot: it reads and edits Resolve project files (.drp, .drt, .drx) and applies DB or XML level changes with no Resolve running, so it can run cloud or local. Both ship in one npm install.
What is Bradford Post Assistant, and is it part of this repo?A closed-beta desktop app from the same maintainers, built on this open foundation: an on-device post-production copilot that watches the Resolve session live, with encrypted on-device memory, so client material never leaves the workstation. The open-source servers are fully functional on their own.
