Bivor (from beaver — the industrious builder) is a macOS desktop workbench based on the pi coding agent, built to match the experience of Codex / Claude desktop apps — and go further with visual harness orchestration, guardrails, cloud VM sandboxes, and parallel git-worktree tasks.

Each chat runs the pi SDK (AgentSessionRuntime) inside its own isolated Electron utility process. Sessions, auth, skills, prompts, and MCP config are fully shared with the pi CLI under ~/.pi/agent/, so you can move between the terminal and the desktop app freely.

Features

Core chat & multitasking

Runtime presets

Pick how much power each chat gets — presets gate tools and UI surfaces:

Preset What it is
Daily Chat / writing assistant. No coding side effects; web search, web fetch, memory
Coding Full agent: all tools, worktrees, sandbox, harness
Review Read/search only; guardrails deny write/edit/bash
Minimal Just bash + read + edit

Harness orchestration & governance

Agent capabilities

Resources & interop

Sessions, models & auth

Scheduler & UX

Install

Download the latest DMG from Releases — arm64 for Apple Silicon, x64 for Intel Macs.

[!WARNING] Builds are currently unsigned (no Apple Developer certificate yet). On first launch, right-click the app → Open, or clear the quarantine flag: xattr -cr /Applications/Bivor.app.

Developing from source

Requirements: macOS (Apple Silicon or Intel), Node.js ≥ 20, pnpm.

git clone https://github.com/ryanlab/bivor.git
cd bivor
pnpm install
pnpm dev # electron-vite dev with HMR
pnpm typecheck
pnpm build # build to out/
pnpm dist:mac # package DMG + ZIP into dist/

Configuration

What Where
Model API keys / OAuth (shared with pi CLI) ~/.pi/agent/auth.json — manage from Settings
Custom providers / relays models.json (pi CLI-compatible)
Sessions (shared with pi CLI) ~/.pi/agent/sessions/
App config (optional keys below) Electron userData/bivor-config.json

Optional integrations, each enabling extra tools when configured in Settings:

Testing

node scripts/sdk-smoke.mjs <provider> # SDK-level smoke test
node scripts/e2e-cdp.mjs full "task" # real end-to-end UI run driven over CDP
node scripts/e2e-harness.mjs # resources center + hot harness orchestration
node scripts/shot.mjs out.png "js expr" # CDP screenshot / state injection

E2E scripts require the app to be started with --remote-debugging-port=9223.

What is this?Bivor is a macOS desktop workbench built on the pi coding agent, designed to match Codex/Claude desktop apps and go further with visual harness orchestration, guardrails, cloud VM sandboxes, and parallel git-worktree tasks.
Is this a standalone app, or tied to the pi CLI?It is a native Electron desktop app, but every session, API key, skill, prompt and MCP config is fully shared with the pi CLI under ~/.pi/agent/, so you can switch between terminal and desktop freely.
Do I need API keys to use it?Model API keys or OAuth logins (Claude Pro, ChatGPT, Copilot) are stored in ~/.pi/agent/auth.json, shared with the pi CLI. Optional E2B, Tavily and Vercel keys unlock the cloud VM sandbox, web search and deploy tool respectively.
Is the DMG ready to run right out of the box?Not quite — builds are currently unsigned since there's no Apple Developer certificate yet, so on first launch you need to right-click the app and choose Open, or clear the quarantine flag manually.
Does it work on Intel Macs, or only Apple Silicon? Both — Bivor ships separate builds for arm64 (Apple Silicon) and x64 (Intel Macs).
What is Mission Control in Bivor? It is a live grid view (⌘O) of all running tasks showing status, current tool, inline approvals, subagents, and token/cost usage.
What are git-worktree tasks? One click spawns an agent in its own git worktree and branch (pi/task-*), letting multiple agents edit code in parallel without conflicts, then merge back through a built-in merge panel.
What does the cloud VM sandbox actually do?With an E2B API key configured, bash/read/write/edit tools can run inside a full remote desktop VM instead of your local machine, with live screen streaming and mouse/keyboard control.
Why is the app called Bivor? The name comes from 'beaver', reflecting the app's focus on being an industrious builder for orchestrating coding agent work.
