What is this?qBittorrent is a free, open-source BitTorrent client written in C++ with Qt, built on top of the libtorrent engine. It aims to be a solid alternative to other torrent clients, focusing on speed, stability, and Unicode support.
Is this a desktop app, or does it also have a web interface? It's primarily a native Qt desktop application, but the project's CI setup includes a dedicated WebUI test pipeline, indicating it also ships a browser-based remote control interface alongside the desktop GUI.
How do I install qBittorrent? The README doesn't list install steps directly; it points you to a separate INSTALL file in the repository for build and installation instructions.
What does it need to build and run?It requires Qt for the GUI and the libtorrent (libtorrent-rasterbar) library for the actual torrent protocol handling.
Can I trust the official downloads are untampered?Since v3.3.4, all official source tarballs and binaries are PGP-signed with a published key, so you can verify authenticity before running them.
Does it run on Windows, macOS, and Linux?Yes, it's a cross-platform client; the repo's CI runs separate build/test pipelines for macOS, Windows, and Ubuntu.
What is libtorrent and why does qBittorrent rely on it?libtorrent (libtorrent-rasterbar) is a BitTorrent engine library by Arvid Norberg. qBittorrent builds its torrent protocol handling on top of it instead of reimplementing the protocol from scratch.
How does qBittorrent know which country a peer is in?It uses the free IP to Country Lite database from DB-IP, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0, to resolve peer locations.
Why did the project pick Qt instead of a native toolkit?Qt lets the developers maintain a single C++ codebase that compiles natively for Windows, macOS, and Linux, which is how qBittorrent stays cross-platform with one GUI implementation.
