The pytest framework makes it easy to write small tests, yet scales to support complex functional testing for applications and libraries.

An example of a simple test:

.. code-block:: python

# content of test_sample.py
def inc(x):
    return x + 1

def test_answer():
    assert inc(3) == 5

To execute it::

$ pytest
============================= test session starts =============================
collected 1 items

test_sample.py F

================================== FAILURES ===================================
_________________________________ test_answer _________________________________

    def test_answer():
>       assert inc(3) == 5
E       assert 4 == 5
E        +  where 4 = inc(3)

test_sample.py:5: AssertionError
========================== 1 failed in 0.04 seconds ===========================

Thanks to pytest's detailed assertion introspection, you can simply use plain assert statements. See getting-started <https://docs.pytest.org/en/stable/getting-started.html#our-first-test-run>_ for more examples.

What is this?pytest is a Python testing framework that makes it easy to write small tests, yet scales to support complex functional testing for applications and libraries.
Is pytest a library I import, or a command-line tool?It's a framework with a command-line runner: you write test functions in normal .py files and start them with the 'pytest' command — it auto-discovers test modules and functions on its own.
How do I get started with it?Install pytest following the getting-started guide, add a test file with plain 'assert' checks, then run '$ pytest' — results print straight to the terminal.
Are there any prerequisites, like a specific Python version?Just an interpreter: Python 3.10+ or PyPy3. Nothing else is needed to run your first test.
Does it work the same on Windows, macOS and Linux?Yes — the README sets no OS restrictions, so anything that runs Python can run pytest, with the same command everywhere.
Is pytest free to use, even for commercial work?Yes — it's MIT-licensed free and open source software. Companies that want official backing can additionally buy commercial support via the Tidelift Subscription.
Do I need special assert methods like unittest's assertEqual?No — thanks to pytest's detailed assertion introspection you simply write plain 'assert' statements. On failure it shows real values, e.g. 'assert 4 == 5' plus '+ where 4 = inc(3)'.
Will pytest run my existing unittest suite?Yes — it can run unittest (or trial) test suites out of the box, so you can adopt it gradually without rewriting your tests.
What are fixtures?Modular fixtures are pytest's way of managing test resources — from small ones to parametrized long-lived ones — keeping setup code organized and reusable across tests.
How big is the plugin ecosystem?Very big: pytest has a rich plugin architecture with over 1300 external plugins and a thriving community.
What are similar projects?ava, pest, phpunit, enzyme, testify, truffle, vitest, SeleniumBase
