Git History

Quickly browse the history of files in any git repo:

  1. Go to a file in GitHub (or GitLab, or Bitbucket)
  2. Replace github.com with github.githistory.xyz
  3. There's no step three

Extensions

Browsers

You can also add an Open in Git History button to GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket with the Chrome and Firefox extensions.

Or you can use a bookmarklet.
javascript: (function() {
  var url = window.location.href;
  var regEx = /^(https?\:\/\/)(www\.)?(github|gitlab|bitbucket)\.(com|org)\/(.*)$/i;
  if (regEx.test(url)) {
    url = url.replace(regEx, "$1$3.githistory.xyz/$5");
    window.open(url, "_blank");
  } else {
    alert("Not a Git File URL");
  }
})();

Local Repos

You can use Git History for local git repos with the CLI or with the VS Code extension.

What is this?Git History is a free tool for quickly browsing the history of any file in a git repository — you see how the file evolved, commit by commit.
Is it only a website, or are there installable versions too?There are more forms: Chrome and Firefox extensions (or a bookmarklet) add an 'Open in Git History' button on GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket, and local repos work through a CLI or a VS Code extension.
How do I check a file's history on GitHub with it?Open the file on GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket and replace the domain: github.com becomes github.githistory.xyz. That's the whole flow.
Do I need to install anything to use the web viewer?No — no install and no account; the whole thing is a URL edit in your browser.
What if my repo is local or hosted somewhere else?Local git repos are covered by the CLI and the VS Code extension. For hosted repos the README only names GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket — other hosts aren't mentioned.
Does it cost anything?It's free — the project is MIT-licensed, and the author asks for support through Patreon and GitHub Sponsors instead.
What does the history view look like?It replays the file commit by commit as an animated, syntax-highlighted view: the web app is built with React and the rebound spring-animation library, uses Prism for highlighting and jsdiff for line-level changes, and is based on the Night Owl theme.
Can I browse a whole repo, or only single files?It's per-file: you open one file and step through its history. The README doesn't describe a whole-repo graph or branch view.
Can I support the project?Yes — the README invites Patreon support for the author's open-source work and has a sponsors section, and points to @pomber on Twitter for updates.
