About The Project

Product Name Screen Shot

There are many great README templates available on GitHub; however, I didn't find one that really suited my needs so I created this enhanced one. I want to create a README template so amazing that it'll be the last one you ever need -- I think this is it.

Here's why:

Of course, no one template will serve all projects since your needs may be different. So I'll be adding more in the near future. You may also suggest changes by forking this repo and creating a pull request or opening an issue. Thanks to all the people who have contributed to expanding this template!

Use the BLANK_README.md to get started.

Built With

This section should list any major frameworks/libraries used to bootstrap your project. Leave any add-ons/plugins for the acknowledgements section. Here are a few examples.

Getting Started

This is an example of how you may give instructions on setting up your project locally. To get a local copy up and running follow these simple example steps.

Prerequisites

This is an example of how to list things you need to use the software and how to install them.

Installation

Below is an example of how you can instruct your audience on installing and setting up your app. This template doesn't rely on any external dependencies or services.

  1. Get a free API Key at https://example.com
  2. Clone the repo
    git clone https://github.com/github_username/repo_name.git

  3. Install NPM packages
    npm install

  4. Enter your API in config.js
    const API_KEY = 'ENTER YOUR API';

  5. Change git remote url to avoid accidental pushes to base project
    git remote set-url origin github_username/repo_name
git remote -v # confirm the changes

Best-README-Template (othneildrew/Best-README-Template)

Searching Database…

What is this? This is a README template designed to help you quickly write a polished, well-structured README.md for your own GitHub projects, with ready-made sections for About, Getting Started, Usage, Roadmap, and Contact.
Is this a tool I run, or just a markdown file I copy?It is a static template, not software: you copy README.md (or the empty BLANKREADME.md) into your own repository and edit the text, badges, and links to match your project.
How do I start using it?Fork or copy the repository, then replace the placeholder project name, description, screenshot, and badge/link references at the top of the file with your own project's details, and fill in each section as it applies to you.
Do the example installation and usage steps work out of the box for my project? No, the Prerequisites, Installation, and Usage steps (e.g. 'Get a free API Key', 'npm install') are just placeholder examples you must replace with your own project's real setup instructions.
What are the badges at the top of the template for? They are placeholder shields.io badges for contributors, forks, stargazers, issues, license, and a contact link, meant to be rewired to point at your own repository once you adapt the template.
What is the 'Built With' section meant to show?A spot to list the major frameworks or libraries your project is built on, with example badges already provided for Next.js, React, Vue, Angular, Svelte, Laravel, Bootstrap, and jQuery that you swap for your own stack.
Why did the author make this instead of writing a README from scratch each time? The author wanted to stop repeating the same README-writing work on every project and apply DRY principles, so this template bundles a complete, reusable structure with Roadmap and Contributing sections already filled in.
Is there a blank starting point if I don't want the example content?Yes, BLANKREADME.md is included as an empty version of the same template so you can fill in sections from scratch without deleting sample text first.
