What is this?NodeSource's Node.js binary distributions: prebuilt Node.js for Linux that you install through your system's package manager (apt, yum/dnf) instead of downloading and wiring up Node by hand.
Are these the Node packages themselves, or something I run?It hosts the Shell setup scripts and docs, not the binaries. You run one script once, it points your package manager at NodeSource's repo, and after that nodejs installs and updates like any apt or yum package.
How do I install Node.js through it?Curl the setup script for the Node major version you want and pipe it into bash, e.g. curl -fsSL https://deb.nodesource.com/setup_22.x | sudo -E bash -, then install with apt-get install nodejs (or dnf/yum install nodejs on RPM distros).
Do I need anything installed before I start?Just a Debian- or RHEL-family Linux with sudo/root and its stock package manager — no Node, Docker or other prerequisites.
Is this still the go-to way to install Node, or is it being phased out?It looks to be winding down: the current README is only a pointer to the old docs, and the repo's CI includes a deprecated.yaml workflow — worth double-checking current docs before a fresh install.
Which systems does it cover?DEB-based distros like Debian and Ubuntu, and RPM-based ones like RHEL, Fedora and CentOS. Linux only — Windows and macOS are not handled here.
Why use NodeSource packages instead of my distro's own nodejs package?Because distro repos usually ship an old Node, while NodeSource publishes current release lines, so you can stay on a recent LTS or Current version through normal apt/yum updates.
Can I pick which Node major version I get?Yes — setup scripts are published per release line (setup_18.x, setup_20.x, setup_22.x, ...), so the one you curl decides the major version apt or yum installs and tracks.
Is any of this paid?No — the binary distributions and setup scripts are free, and the repository itself is MIT-licensed.
What are similar projects?bashka, ProxmoxVE, nvm, brew, choco, yarn, pip, jsdoc
