What is this?An open-source, community-written guide for programmers in China who want to become civil servants: exam prep best practices plus a candid handbook of work and life inside the system (体制内).
Is this an app or tool I install, or just reading material?Pure reading material, not software — Markdown documents on GitHub: a README handbook, a wiki of resource lists, and Q&A issues. There is nothing to install or run.
Where should I start if I know nothing about China's civil-service exam?Start with the Quick start links at the top, then the overview chapter (概述) that lays out the whole path from choosing an exam to landing a post; the practice (实践) chapters then walk through each exam stage in order.
Is the content complete on GitHub, and is it still being updated? The authors are volunteers with day jobs, so updates are irregular — they once paused for over four months — and the remaining interview write-ups are no longer published on GitHub, only in their exam community.
Is it aimed at elite big-tech engineers, or ordinary developers like me?Ordinary people rather than elites: the authors describe themselves as average students from outsourcing firms and non-985/211 backgrounds, and the guide is pitched at any common person planning the exam.
What topics does the guide actually cover? Two halves. Exam prep: the 行测 aptitude test, 申论 essay writing, the interview stage, fitness test, medical exam, political vetting (政审) and final inspection, plus application and position-choice question handbooks. Life in the system: work environment, daily duties, promotion paths, office relationships, core competitiveness and pay.
Which exams does it cover? The national exam (国考), provincial exams (省考) and public-institution recruitment (事业单位), including how they differ from teaching posts and military civilian roles, plus advice on picking a position and on the easier township route versus holding out for a preferred post.
Why did the authors leave programming for government jobs?Burnout and precarity: the frontend author was laid off in 2018 despite full-time 996 at an outsourcing firm, with no severance. She quit, studied full time for three months and passed the 2019 provincial exam; teammates followed, and the project grew from friends asking how they did it.
How reliable and current is the content? The team vets every shared prep material for source and content, and workplace or salary stories come from first-hand interviews with insiders. It is volunteer-run with a publicly apologized four-month pause, but 2024 national and provincial exam guidance has been added.
