What is this? This is the community manifest repository for the Windows Package Manager (winget) — it holds the YAML-style manifest files that define how each app is downloaded and installed, and it is the default source winget queries.
Is this the winget tool itself, or just data for it?It is not the winget client — it is the data backing it. The actual Windows Package Manager is a separate open-source command-line client; this repo just stores the package manifests it reads from.
How do I get my app listed in winget? You submit a manifest as a pull request after following the 'Authoring a manifest' and 'Testing a manifest' guides and the first-time contributor checklist; alternatively you can file a 'Requesting a new package' issue and let someone else author it.
What installer formats are accepted for a manifest?Installers must be MSIX, MSI, APPX, MSIXBundle, APPXBundle, or .exe; font files (.ttf/.ttc/.otf/.otc/.fnt) are technically supported but not yet open to community submissions.
Any catch before my manifest PR can be merged?Script-based installers aren't supported at all, and contributors must sign Microsoft's Contributor License Agreement (CLA) before a pull request can be accepted.
Who actually uses this repo day to day?App publishers who want their software discoverable via 'winget install' submit manifests here, while regular winget users benefit from it automatically since it's the default source.
What is Windows Package Manager (winget)?Winget is Microsoft's open-source command-line client for installing, upgrading, and managing apps on Windows; this repository is the manifest database it reads from by default.
Can I download the winget client or an installer from this repo? No, this repo only stores package manifests, not the winget client itself or executable installers for third-party apps.
What happens if I don't want to author a manifest myself? You can open a 'Requesting a new package' or 'Requesting a new package version' issue so someone else can submit the manifest for you.
