Fluent UI React is shipping its v9 final stable release. Visit the Fluent UI React v9 Release page on the wiki to learn more about the upcoming release schedule.

Fluent UI web represents a collection of utilities, React components, and Web Components for building web applications.

This repo is home to 3 separate projects today. Combining Fluent UI React v9 components with Fluent UI React v8 or v0 components is possible and allows gradual migration to Fluent UI v9.

The following table will help you navigate the 3 projects and understand their differences.

Why are there two React versions? Fluent UI v8 is still widely used. We encourage you to migrate to Fluent UI v9. See the Migration overview.

Looking for Office UI Fabric React?

The Office UI Fabric React project has evolved to Fluent UI.

The office-ui-fabric-react repo is now this repo (fluentui in the Microsoft organization)! The name change should not disrupt any current Fabric usage, repo clones, pull requests, or issue reporting. Links should redirect to the new location. The library formerly known as office-ui-fabric-react is now available as @fluentui/react (see above table for more information).

We have a lot in store for Fluent UI - Read our announcement here.

Looking for Fluent UI React Northstar?

Fluent UI React Northstar has been superseded by Fluent UI React Components v9 and reached End Of Life in July 2025.

For more details about Fluent UI React Northstar, see its source and README.md.

What is this?Fluent UI web is Microsoft's collection of utilities, React components, and web components for building web applications, and the design system behind Microsoft 365, Office, and Edge.
Is it one library or three separate ones? One repo, three projects: React Components v9 (used by Microsoft 365), React v8 (used by Office), and Web Components (used by Edge). Each ships as its own npm package.
How do I add it to my app?Install from npm for the line you want: @fluentui/react-components for v9, @fluentui/react for the mature v8, or @fluentui/web-components for the framework-agnostic web components.
Do I have to use React with it?The React packages need React, naturally. The web-components package is built on standard Web Components, so it also works outside React in other frameworks or plain pages.
There seem to be two React versions. Which one do I use? There are two React generations side by side: v8 is mature and still widely used, but v9 is the final stable release and Microsoft encourages migrating to it.
Is this web only, or is there a native version too?Web only. The entire collection targets web applications; nothing in this repo ships native iOS or Android components.
Is the whole thing usable under MIT?The code is MIT, but the fonts and icons are not: their usage is subject to a separate assets license agreement, so check those terms before shipping them.
What happened to Office UI Fabric and Northstar?Office UI Fabric React evolved into Fluent UI: the old repo now redirects to microsoft/fluentui, and its library lives on as @fluentui/react. Northstar was superseded by v9 and reached End Of Life in July 2025.
Can I use v8 and v9 components together while migrating?Yes, the README explicitly supports combining v9 with v8 (or even v0), so you can migrate to v9 gradually instead of rewriting your UI in one go.
Where can I learn the design decisions behind the components? The FluentUI Insights video series covers them in six episodes: positioning, styling, Griffel, foundational APIs, theming, and being accessible by default.
Is the project still actively maintained?Yes. v9 has shipped its final stable release, the repo runs bundle-size and package-check CI, and Microsoft 365 itself is listed as a consumer of the v9 components.
