TypeScript is a language for application-scale JavaScript. TypeScript adds optional types to JavaScript that support tools for large-scale JavaScript applications for any browser, for any host, on any OS. TypeScript compiles to readable, standards-based JavaScript. Try it out at the playground, and stay up to date via our blog and Twitter account.

What is this?TypeScript is a language for application-scale JavaScript: JavaScript extended with a type system, developed by Microsoft for building large applications.
Do I have to rewrite my existing JavaScript to use it?No - TypeScript is a superset of JavaScript, so your current code already fits; the types it adds are optional, so you can adopt them gradually.
How do I get my hands on it?The README's Installing section links the latest stable version and nightly builds, and there is an online playground where you can try the language before installing anything.
Can browsers run TypeScript directly? No - it compiles first: what actually runs is the readable, standards-based JavaScript output, in any browser, on any host, on any OS.
If I install the compiler, which systems does it run on?The compiler is a Node.js command-line tool - the repo's package.json requires Node 22.18 or newer - so it runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.
What is the compiler itself written in?GitHub lists Go as this repository's primary language - the native, Go-based compiler implementation lives in this repo these days.
Is TypeScript open source?Yes - GitHub lists the Apache-2.0 license for this repo, and the project has adopted the Microsoft Open Source Code of Conduct.
What's coming next for the language? The README points to a public roadmap that details the planned features and the project's future direction.
