Snow Apps

Snow Apps repository, providing source code for Snow Shot and Snow Image Viewer.

🏗️🚧🦺

Install Snow Shot on Windows

Download the installer from Snow Shot releases. Install the offline Windows x64 package from the WinGet community repository with:

winget install --exact --id mg-chao.snow-shot --source winget

This package includes published beta versions and the default OCR resources. See WinGet release support for upgrades, removal, and maintainer setup.

Install Snow Shot on macOS

After the first stable Homebrew release is published, Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 15 or later can install with:

brew update
brew install --cask mg-chao/tap/snow-shot
brew upgrade --cask snow-shot
brew uninstall --cask snow-shot

Installation reuses Snow Shot's local signing identity and may request Keychain access and macOS privacy permissions. See Homebrew installation and migration for existing installations, custom app directories, and recovery.

Searching Database…

What is this? This repository hosts the source code for two desktop apps: Snow Shot, a screenshot and OCR tool with screen recording, and Snow Image Viewer, a separate image-viewing app bundled in the same repo.
Are Snow Shot and Snow Image Viewer one app or two separate apps? They are two distinct desktop applications (plus shared engine/crate code) kept in one source repository, each installed and licensed on its own.
How do I install Snow Shot?On Windows, download the installer from the Snow Shot releases page, or install the offline x64 package via the WinGet community repository. On macOS, it will be installable through Homebrew once the first stable release ships.
Do I need Apple Silicon for the macOS build?Yes, the Homebrew install is limited to Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 15 or later.
Is the macOS version ready to install today? Not yet in a stable form — Homebrew install opens up only after the first stable Homebrew release is published, and the current Windows WinGet package still ships beta builds.
Can OCR work without an internet connection?Yes, the Windows package is offline and bundles the default OCR resources in, so text recognition doesn't require downloading anything extra.
Does installing it touch system permissions? On macOS, installation reuses Snow Shot's own local code-signing identity and can prompt for Keychain access and macOS privacy permissions (e.g. screen recording).
What can Snow Shot actually do?Going by its GitHub topics, Snow Shot combines screenshot capture, screen recording, and OCR text extraction in a single Windows/macOS tool.
What is Snow Image Viewer for? It's the companion image-viewing app in the same repo, licensed separately under GPLv3 and built on the shared Snow engine/UI crates.
Is there a Linux build? Not Stated In README — only Windows (installer/WinGet) and macOS (Homebrew) install instructions are documented.
