Awesome Indie Awesome

Resources to help independent developers make money.

Making money from your own code has never been easier, but it's still hard. Here, I try to curate a list of resources to help everyone interested in making money from their digital products get inspired and give it a try. Be it monetizing side-projects, bootstrapping business ideas, etc.

Projects don't need to be big, actually, it's better if they are not, they just need to be profitable. They might provide a passive income after the initial bulk of work, and who knows, maybe even help you reach financial independence.

Going indie does have lots of lifestyle perks :)

All these resources might help inspire you and put you on the right track but in the end what matters is to MAKE and TRY stuff. So devour this content responsibly :)

Contributions are more than welcome.

There's obviously a million posts on the topic. I'm sure this is not a good selection but it'll get you started. Here you can find some more:

Again, I'm not quite fond of listing [$] products made by indie developers targeting indie developers, especially because I haven't tried them myself, but due to several references I assume they are probably worth it and some people might find value in learning about them.

Specific topics

In the future, I'd like to have a list of resources for more specific topics or FAQs such as:

What is this?A curated list of resources to help independent developers make money from their own products: communities, newsletters, podcasts, talks, posts, books, tools and courses, compiled by indie maker @mezod of everyday.app.
Is it an app or a service I sign up for?Neither — it is not software at all, just a single annotated README on GitHub: links with short commentary that you read and follow, nothing to install or run.
How is the list organized?By content type — Communities, Newsletters, Podcasts, Talks, Posts, Blogs, Case Studies, Events, Books, Tools, Courses, plus Specific Topics. There is no set path; per the author, in the end what matters is to make and try stuff.
Are all the listed resources free? Most entries are free, but items marked [$] are paid — and the author warns he usually has not tried those himself and added them only because they are referenced in several places.
Is this aimed at founders building venture-scale startups? No — it targets indie developers monetizing side projects and bootstrapped businesses. Projects don't need to be big, better if they are not, just profitable, ideally bringing passive income after the initial bulk of work.
What kind of resources will I actually find inside?Named examples include the IndieHackers interview site, podcasts like Startups for the Rest of Us and the IndieHackers Podcast, Pieter Levels' talk 'Bootstrapping Side Projects To Profit', Tyler Tringas' Storemapper case study (bootstrapped to $50,000/year in 2 years), and blogs by Rob Walling, Patrick McKenzie and Pieter Levels.
Why did the author build this list? The author, indie maker @mezod, notes that making money from your own code has never been easier but is still hard, so he curates resources to inspire people to monetize side projects and bootstrap business ideas — while stressing that in the end what matters is to make and try stuff.
Can I trust the paid [$] recommendations?Treat them as pointers, not endorsements: the author admits he usually has not tried the paid entries he lists, and for some, like MegaMaker Club at $249 for lifetime access, he says outright that he is not a member and cannot personally endorse them, inviting readers to check reviews.
Is the list still maintained today? The repo launched in May 2017, is not archived, and the README openly invites contributions, so it grows through community submissions while the selection and annotations remain the author's own.
