Awesome Linux Software

Notice (May 2026): I'm archiving this repository. After years of maintaining it, I've found it increasingly difficult to curate quality contributions — the repo has become a target for self-promotion rather than a genuinely useful resource. It's not an easy decision, but it's the right one for me. The content will remain available, and I hope the community continues to build on it through forks. To everyone who starred, forked, contributed, or simply used this repository over the years — thank you. This project started as a personal list for myself, and I never expected it to grow into something so many people found useful. Please visit maintained forks by core maintainers such as @DimitrisPa, @FabioLolix

What is this?A curated community list of Linux applications and tools for everyday users and developers — a catalog you browse to discover software, not a program you install.
Is it a piece of software, or just a reference list?Just a reference list: one large GitHub README organized into categories, where each entry is a link to the project's own page.
Is the list still being maintained? No — the author archived the repo in May 2026, saying quality curation had become unsustainable as it attracted self-promotion; the content stays online, and maintained forks by @DimitrisPa and @FabioLolix are recommended instead.
Why did the author archive it?After years of maintaining it, he found quality contributions increasingly hard to curate: the repo became a target for self-promotion rather than a genuinely useful resource. He calls archiving the right decision, though not an easy one.
What kind of apps can I actually find in it?Real everyday Linux software: Cura and FreeCAD for 3D printing, Audacity and LMMS for audio work, Mixxx for DJing, Cmus for console music playback, plus backup, security, development, gaming and system tools.
Where did this list come from originally? The author compiled it from his own experience in college as a personal list, and never expected it to grow into a resource this many people would find useful — it gathered over 25,000 stars.
