What is this?calibre is an open-source e-book manager: it can view, convert, edit and catalog e-books in all the major formats, and it also talks to e-book reader devices.
Is this a program I install on my computer, or something that runs in a browser? It's a cross-platform desktop application with installers for Linux, Windows and macOS — no browser or server involved.
How do I get it onto my machine?Installers for all supported platforms are on the official calibre site, and various package repositories carry it too. To build it yourself, grab the source tarball of the current release and follow the build instructions.
Do I need Python or anything else installed first? No — for everyday use a ready-made installer is all you need. Python only matters if you set up a development environment to work on calibre's code.
Does it only work with Kindles, or other e-readers too?Kindle is just one target — calibre works with all the major e-book formats and can talk to e-book reader devices in general.
Is calibre free, or is there a paid tier? It's completely free and open source (GPL-3.0), built by volunteers around the world — if you find it useful, you can donate to support development.
Can it fill in covers and book details automatically?Yes — calibre can go out to the internet and fetch metadata for your books, so you don't have to enter authors, titles and covers by hand.
Can I use it to catch up on news on my e-reader?Yes. It can download newspapers and convert them into e-books for convenient reading on your device.
Does it run on my phone or tablet? No mobile version is mentioned — the official builds target Linux, Windows and macOS only.
