make test

This is a repo to hold various Dockerfiles for images I create.

About

Almost all of these live on dockerhub under jess. Because you cannot use notary with autobuilds on dockerhub I also build these continuously on a private registry at r.j3ss.co for public download. (You're welcome.)

You may also want to checkout my dotfiles, specifically the aliases for all these files which are here: github.com/jessfraz/dotfiles/blob/master/.dockerfunc.

Contributing

I try to make sure each Dockerfile has a command at the top to document running it, if a file you are looking at does not have a command, please pull request it!

Using the Makefile

$ make help
build Builds all the dockerfiles in the repository.
dockerfiles Tests the changes to the Dockerfiles build.
image Build a Dockerfile (ex. DIR=telnet).
latest-versions Checks all the latest versions of the Dockerfile contents.
run Run a Dockerfile from the command at the top of the file (ex. DIR=telnet).
shellcheck Runs the shellcheck tests on the scripts.
test Runs the tests on the repository.

Searching Database…

What is this?A collection of Dockerfiles for Docker images Jess Frazelle builds and uses on her own desktop and servers; almost all images are published on Docker Hub under the 'jess' namespace.
Is this one app, or a pile of separate images?A pile: many independent Dockerfiles, each building its own image, so you pull only the ones you want instead of one monolithic app.
How do I run one of these?Run the prebuilt image straight from Docker Hub (docker run jess/ ); if you build it yourself, every Dockerfile documents its exact run command at the top of the file.
What do I need installed to use it?Just Docker. To build the images locally the repo is driven by a Makefile, and a make-test GitHub Actions workflow runs the tests in CI.
Do the images get updated, or is this a frozen one-off?They stay current: the author builds them continuously and publishes them for public download on her own registry at r.j3ss.co, alongside the Docker Hub copies.
Is this aimed at desktops or servers? Both — it is the author's personal image set used on her desktop and on servers, so the collection mixes desktop tooling with server-side utilities.
Will these run on my Mac, or is it Linux-only?They are Linux containers, so they run anywhere Docker runs: natively on Linux servers and desktops, or through Docker Desktop on macOS and Windows.
Why do the images live on both Docker Hub and r.j3ss.co?Docker Hub autobuilds cannot be used with notary (image signing), so the author also builds everything continuously on her own registry r.j3ss.co and offers it there for public download.
Are there ready-made shell aliases for running all these images?Yes — the author keeps aliases for all of these images in her dotfiles repo, in the .dockerfunc file at github.com/jessfraz/dotfiles, so you can launch them with short commands.
