What's new in 1.20.4

1.20.4 is an unusually big followup release, but given the new multiplayer developments, we need something to cover the longer gap to 1.21. During this cycle, I've mostly focused on UX improvements.

What is this?PPSSPP is a fast and portable PlayStation Portable (PSP) emulator, so you can play PSP games on your own devices. It runs on Android, Windows, Mac, Linux and iOS and is written in C++.
How do I get it and start playing?Grab a ready build from the official website, or get fresh development builds for Android, Windows and Mac from the /devbuilds page. To compile it yourself, build instructions are on the wiki.
Do I need a BIOS or any other files from a real PSP console? No. PPSSPP is an HLE (high-level emulation) emulator, so it plays games without requiring a BIOS file from a real console.
Will every game I throw at it run perfectly?Good but not universal — the default settings balance good compatibility and speed, and each release ships a long list of game-specific fixes. Check the community compatibility feedback for your specific titles.
My phone is quite old — will it still run there? On Android the minimum version was raised for technical reasons, so KitKat is no longer supported. On Windows, D3D9 support was removed while ARM64 is now officially supported.
Is PPSSPP free and open source?Yes — it is free, open-source software originally released under GPL 2.0 (and later) in November 2012, created by Henrik Rydgård with many contributors.
Can I play games that used ad-hoc local multiplayer?Yes. PPSSPP supports ad-hoc multiplayer through relay servers, including aemu relay servers, with a dynamically updated server list where you can add or remove entries.
What controllers work with it?On Windows, DualSense, DualShock and Switch Pro controllers are supported natively, including tilt controls for DualSense and Switch Pro. On touch devices you get remappable on-screen controls with separate landscape and portrait layouts.
Can it make games look better than on real PSP hardware?Yes — GPU texture upscaling can sharpen textures beyond the original, with algorithms like MMPX Advanced, NNEDI3 and Spline36. Rendering goes through Vulkan, D3D11 or OpenGL, and a software renderer exists as a fallback.
Does it support RetroAchievements?Yes, PPSSPP integrates RetroAchievements, and recent releases improved the UI around achievement subsets and the underlying support library.
