"They can take our repos, but they can never take our... wait, they actually took our chat history too."

Searching Database…

What is this?WeFlow is a tool for viewing, analyzing, and exporting your WeChat chat history — it crunches your chats into personal data visualizations and a one-of-a-kind annual report.
Is WeFlow a desktop app running on my computer, or some online service? It runs entirely on your own machine — the README describes it as a fully local tool for real-time viewing, analysis, and export of WeChat chat history, with no cloud component.
So can it still pull my chats out of WeChat today? Not on its own. After a compliance refactor the project no longer extracts decryption keys or decrypts WeChat's database — the disclaimer stresses it contains no cracking, decryption, or reverse-engineering code and points to unencrypted, ordinary SQLite files supplied by the user.
Why would I need a separate app just for my WeChat history?Because WeChat keeps that history locked away: messages sit in an encrypted local database you cannot open, with no real export option. The project's premise is that family chats, work conversations, and data stored on your own computer should belong to you.
Since everything runs locally, can I use it with no internet at all?Yes. Viewing, analysis, and export all happen on your machine, so nothing depends on a remote service.
Why does the README read like a legal parody?Because it is one. The author says Tencent's legal department (the 'T company') sent a 4-page letter during a January DMCA takedown wave against WeChat open-source tools, so the project staged a mock 'compliance refactor' and jokingly frames its DMCA 1201 notice as an official award for 'sophisticated techniques'.
What did that compliance refactor change?Three removals: no more extracting the local decryption key, no more decrypting the database, no more interfering with the WeChat client. The announced 'new features' are jokes — 'thought-based chat export' (close your eyes and recall yesterday's chats) and a 'Schrödinger data browser' that only accepts 0s and 1s you decipher manually.
Was WeFlow the only project targeted in that crackdown? No. The README calls January a 'Damocles month' for all WeChat open-source developers and pays tribute to the countless predecessor projects that fell in the DMCA wave, quipping: 'They can take our repos, but they can never take our... wait, they actually took our chat history too.'
