The .NET Compiler Platform

Roslyn is the open-source implementation of both the C# and Visual Basic compilers with an API surface for building code analysis tools.

C# and Visual Basic Language Feature Suggestions

If you want to suggest a new feature for the C# or Visual Basic languages go here:

Contributing

All work on the C# and Visual Basic compiler happens directly on GitHub. Both core team members and external contributors send pull requests which go through the same review process.

If you are interested in fixing issues and contributing directly to the code base, a great way to get started is to ask some questions on GitHub Discussions! Then check out our contributing guide which covers the following:

Community

The Roslyn community can be found on GitHub Discussions, where you can ask questions, voice ideas, and share your projects.

To chat with other community members, you can join the Roslyn channel on the CSharp Community Discord.

Our Code of Conduct applies to all Roslyn community channels and has adopted the .NET Foundation Code of Conduct.

What is this? The .NET Compiler Platform (Roslyn) — the open-source implementation of the C# and Visual Basic compilers, plus rich APIs for building code analysis tools.
So is it a program I run, or an API I code against? Both: the same codebase is the compilers themselves and exposes analysis APIs, so you consume it through packages or tools built on it — not as a standalone app.
How do I get the latest builds if I want to develop against its APIs?Pull the latest pre-release builds from the public NuGet feeds: separate feeds exist for the Compiler, IDE Services, and the .NET SDK.
I have an idea for a new C# language feature — do I file it in this repo?No — language feature suggestions go to dedicated repos: dotnet/csharplang for C# and dotnet/vblang for Visual Basic; csharplang also takes features affecting both languages.
Is this Windows-only, given the Visual Studio connection? No — CI runs builds and tests on Windows, Unix/Linux and macOS, so the compiler is developed as a cross-platform .NET codebase.
Is there a review gate for public API changes?Yes. Roslyn API suggestions go through a dedicated API review process, so API changes are not merged straight from a pull request.
What should I read to understand how Roslyn works inside? The Roslyn Architecture Overview — the README points to it as the place to get started with the Roslyn APIs.
What kinds of tasks can a newcomer pick up?The contributing guide points to finding a bug to fix or a feature to implement in the IDE or the compiler, and covers coding guidelines, debugging and running tests.
