The project's README from github.com/dotnet/coreclr. As one markdown file: README.md.

Going forward, the .NET team is using https://github.com/dotnet/runtime to develop the code and issues formerly in this repository.

What is this?CoreCLR is the runtime for .NET Core — the component that actually executes .NET Core programs. It ships the garbage collector, the JIT compiler, primitive data types and low-level classes.
Is this the whole of .NET Core, or just the engine underneath?Just the engine: the runtime that executes .NET Core code. Other parts of the platform lived in sibling repos — CoreFX for the libraries — until everything was merged in the big consolidation.
If I want to run a .NET Core app, do I grab CoreCLR from here?No — CoreCLR is the runtime your .NET Core apps run on, part of the platform itself. This repo only holds the source and is archived, so there is nothing new to install from here.
Is CoreCLR still developed here, or is the project finished?Development here has ended: the repository is archived and frozen. The .NET team consolidated its GitHub repos and moved the code and issues formerly handled here — see dotnet/announcements#119.
Who would dig into this source today?Anyone curious how a real runtime works — the GC, JIT and base class code are all readable here. App developers just use the .NET runtime and never need this repo.
Which operating systems does it run on?Windows, Linux and macOS — the repository's platform tags cover all three.
What does CoreCLR actually do when a .NET Core app runs?It executes the app's managed code: the JIT compiler compiles it to native machine instructions for the CPU, while the garbage collector handles memory automatically. Primitive types and low-level classes form the foundation.
What is CoreCLR written in?The native core — runtime, JIT and GC — is C++, with the managed side in C#. The repo carries both language tags.
Can I still download CoreCLR builds from this repo?No new builds will appear — the repo is read-only. Its source history stays browsable, while current .NET runtimes come from the consolidated repositories.
