What is this?
A cross-platform .NET sample app demonstrating a microservices, container-based architecture: it runs on Linux, Windows and macOS, powered by .NET 7, Docker containers and Azure Kubernetes Services.
So is it a finished product I can install, or more of a learning example?
More of a learning example: it is a sample application — a complete, runnable codebase meant to demonstrate how a microservices system is built, not a product to deploy for real users.
How do I get it running?
Run the services as Docker containers — from Visual Studio, Visual Studio for Mac, or a plain CLI workflow with dotnet CLI and Docker CLI — with Azure Kubernetes Service as the deployment path. For anything current, start from the successor repo github.com/dotnet/eShop.
What do I need installed to run it?
The .NET 7 SDK and Docker are the basics; the Kubernetes path assumes Azure Kubernetes Service. Any editor works — the project supported Visual Studio, VS for Mac, VS Code and plain CLI environments.
Is this project still alive?
No — as of November 2023 the sample was updated and moved to the dotnet/eShop repo, and this repository is now a read-only archive, so the code is frozen at the .NET 7 era.
I'm learning .NET microservices — is this codebase still worth studying?
That is exactly what it was built for: the dotnet-architecture org's reference sample since 2016 for learning microservices and DDD patterns in .NET, though the maintained version now lives in dotnet/eShop.
What architecture does the sample actually showcase?
Microservices organized around domain-driven design (DDD) patterns, shipped as Docker containers; clients include a SPA web frontend and Xamarin mobile apps.
Where can I still find the old .NET 7 code?
In this archived repo — the README points to the 'dev' branch, which keeps the pre-move code available read-only.
