What is this?pdf2htmlEX is a PDF-to-HTML converter that keeps text and formatting intact. It renders PDF files as real, selectable HTML using modern Web technologies.
Is it a command-line tool, a library, or a web service? It is a command-line utility: you run it on a PDF file and get HTML out. The generated pages can then be hosted, and the README also positions it as an online publishing tool.
How do I get it and convert my first PDF?There is no installer in the README: it points to a Download & Building Quick Start on the wiki, and the repo ships a Makefile, so plan on building from source and then running the pdf2htmlEX binary on your file.
Do I need to install anything else to build and run it?For building it relies on poppler (PDF parsing) and Fontforge (fonts) — the README credits both as the projects that make pdf2htmlEX possible.
Is it still maintained, or should I look elsewhere? No. The repository is archived and the README says development has stopped and new maintainers are wanted, so expect to troubleshoot the build yourself.
Is the license permissive if I want to reuse the code? Not really permissive: the whole package is under GPLv3+ (copyleft), though some resource files are released with relaxed licenses.
What kinds of PDFs does it handle well?Hard ones: the README calls out academic papers with lots of formulas and figures and magazines with complicated layouts — 'No problem!', it says. Demo conversions include a math-formula cheat sheet, a scientific paper and the Git Manual with CJK support.
What exactly survives the conversion?Native HTML text with precise font and location, so text stays selectable and correctly placed. It also keeps links, outlines (bookmarks), printing support, SVG backgrounds and Type 3 fonts.
Does the generated HTML require JavaScript?Only if you pick the on-demand page loading mode. The other output flavor is a single all-in-one HTML file that works without it.
How large are the resulting HTML files?Moderate — the README notes the output is sometimes even smaller than the original PDF.
