charts README

The project's README from github.com/bitnami/charts. As one markdown file: README.md.

The Bitnami Library for Kubernetes

Popular applications, provided by Bitnami, ready to launch on Kubernetes using Kubernetes Helm.

TL;DR

helm install my-release oci://registry-1.docker.io/bitnamicharts/<chart>

Why use Bitnami Secure Images?

Those are hardened, minimal CVE images built and maintained by Bitnami. Bitnami Secure Images are based on the cloud-optimized, security-hardened enterprise OS Photon Linux. Why choose BSI images?

Each image comes with valuable security metadata. You can view the metadata in our public catalog here. Note: Some data is only available with commercial subscriptions to BSI.

If you are looking for our previous generation of images based on Debian Linux, please see the Bitnami Legacy registry.

Vulnerabilities scanner

Each Helm chart contains one or more containers. Those containers use images provided by Bitnami through its test & release pipeline and whose source code can be found at bitnami/containers.

As part of the container releases, the images are scanned for vulnerabilities, here you can find more info about this topic.

Since the container image is an immutable artifact that is already analyzed, as part of the Helm chart release process we are not looking for vulnerabilities in the containers but running different verifications to ensure the Helm charts work as expected, see the testing strategy defined at TESTING.md.

Before you begin

Prerequisites

Setup a Kubernetes Cluster

The quickest way to set up a Kubernetes cluster to install Bitnami Charts is by following the "Bitnami Get Started" guides for the different services:

For setting up Kubernetes on other cloud platforms or bare-metal servers refer to the Kubernetes getting started guide.

Install Helm

Helm is a tool for managing Kubernetes charts. Charts are packages of pre-configured Kubernetes resources.

To install Helm, refer to the Helm install guide and ensure that the helm binary is in the PATH of your shell.

Using Helm

Once you have installed the Helm client, you can deploy a Bitnami Helm Chart into a Kubernetes cluster.

Please refer to the Quick Start guide if you wish to get running in just a few commands, otherwise, the Using Helm Guide provides detailed instructions on how to use the Helm client to manage packages on your Kubernetes cluster.

What is this?Bitnami's library of Helm charts: ready-made packages that launch popular applications on a Kubernetes cluster with a few helm commands instead of hand-written YAML.
Is this one app or a whole catalog of apps?A catalog. The repo holds many charts, one per application, and each chart is a package of pre-configured Kubernetes resources that you install with Helm.
How do I deploy one of these charts?Install the Helm client, then run: helm install my-release oci://registry-1.docker.io/bitnamicharts/ . Updates follow the same pattern with helm upgrade.
What does my cluster need before a chart will install?A Kubernetes cluster at version 1.23 or newer and Helm 3.8.0 or newer, with the helm binary in your shell PATH.
Is everything here free, or is some of it gated? The charts are free, but some security metadata around Bitnami Secure Images is commercial — certain data in the public catalog requires a paid BSI subscription.
What makes the container images these charts deploy different from stock upstream images? They ship as Bitnami Secure Images: hardened, minimal-CVE builds based on the Photon Linux OS, with vulnerability triage via VEX/KEV/EPSS, FIPS and STIG compliance options, SBOMs and in-toto supply-chain attestation.
Are the container images built in this repo?No — images come from the separate bitnami/containers repo through Bitnami's test and release pipeline; this repo only runs verifications that the charts work as expected, per the TESTING.md strategy.
Didn't Bitnami images used to be Debian-based? Where are those now?The previous Debian-based image generation still exists but moved to a separate Bitnami Legacy registry; the current charts track the hardened Photon-based Secure Images.
I don't have a Kubernetes cluster yet — where do I start? The README links Bitnami get-started guides for TKG, Tanzu Mission Control, Azure Marketplace, EKS and GKE; for other clouds or bare metal it points to the official Kubernetes getting-started guide.
