What is this?
Smiley Sans (得意黑) is a Chinese sans-serif typeface that balances a humanist look with geometric structure, featuring narrow, slightly slanted letterforms with details inspired by hand-painted lettering.
Is this a font file or a font-building tool?
It's a finished typeface distributed as ready-to-install font files (OTF, TTF, WOFF2), not a font-generation tool.
How do I install this font?
Download the package from the Releases page: use the .otf or .ttf files for desktop installation by double-clicking and following the OS prompts, or the .woff2 file for web use. On macOS it can also be installed via Homebrew, and Arch Linux users can get it from the AUR.
Do I need any special software to use it?
No special software is required beyond your OS's font installer, though Homebrew is needed if you choose that install method on macOS.
Is it suitable for body text or coding?
No — the design uses artistic, hand-lettering-style strokes that don't strictly follow standard Simplified Chinese character forms, so it's recommended for posters, e-commerce copy, video titles, and headlines, not for body text, code, or mobile UI.
Who is this font best suited for?
Designers and marketers working on posters, e-commerce visuals, video titles/subtitles, book/news headlines, and game UI text.
What characters and languages does it support?
It covers 8,335 Chinese characters (all of GB/T 2312-1980 plus the full Table of General Standard Chinese Characters), basic Latin letters extended to support 100+ languages, Cyrillic, Greek, Japanese kana, Arabic numerals, and various punctuation and symbols.
Does it have any special typography features?
Yes, it supports OpenType features like ordinal forms, fractions, superscripts, proportional and tabular figures, full-width characters, vertical punctuation, locale-specific variants (e.g. Romanian, Dutch), stylistic alternates, and contextual substitutions.
Who designed Smiley Sans?
It was designed by a small team (oooooohmygosh, Chen Zhu, Jianing, Shi Heda, Li Jian) with a Chinese design consultant and dedicated font engineering credited to Zeng Xiangdong, under the studio atelierAnchor.
