What is this?
VERT is an open-source file converter that works as a web app: it converts files like images, video and documents right on your machine instead of uploading them, and it is free to use.
Is this a website I use in my browser, or something I install?
It runs in your browser — a SvelteKit web app where conversion happens client-side via WebAssembly. There is also a Docker setup if you would rather self-host it.
How do I convert my first file?
Open the official instance in a browser and drop in a file. To run your own copy, the Getting Started docs walk through deploying it with Docker.
The description says fully local* — what does the asterisk mean?
One thing is not local: video conversion on the official instance is processed on their servers. Everything else runs locally in your browser, and self-hosting the daemon makes video local too.
Can I run my own copy instead of using their site?
Yes. The repo ships Docker and docker-compose files, and the docs include a Using Docker guide. Self-hosting also keeps video conversion on your own hardware.
If I convert a personal file, does it get uploaded anywhere?
For image and document files, no — the conversion runs in your browser. The exception is video on the official instance, which their servers handle.
What kinds of files can it convert?
A broad spread: video and audio handled by ffmpeg, images by ImageMagick, and document conversions by pandoc — each running as WebAssembly inside the browser tab.
Do I need to install ffmpeg or anything else on my computer?
No. The conversion engines ship compiled to WebAssembly with the app, so the browser page carries everything it needs.
What is the daemon the README mentions?
The service that performs video conversion for the official instance. The README notes it is easily self-hostable, so you can run that part yourself to keep video jobs off their servers.
