SDR--

A software-defined radio application for listening, decoding, and recording. Connect radios, channels, and displays in Patch view, then pin your everyday controls to Rack view.

Run the desktop app with a local SDR, or place the server near your antenna and connect through a browser. Both use the same receiver engine and interface.

Install

Download a desktop installer or portable server from GitHub Releases. The installation guide covers macOS, Windows, Linux, Homebrew, Nix, and Docker.

On macOS:

brew tap newspicel/tap
brew install --cask sdrminusminus

For a headless server on macOS or Linux, install sdrmm from the same tap:

brew install sdrmm
brew services start sdrmm

Open http://localhost:8080. For remote access, configure authentication and HTTPS.

Start with an RTL-SDR

  1. Plug in the RTL-SDR and pick it on the Device node. Set the rate to 2.4 MS/s.
  2. Add a WFM channel from + Node and set it to a local FM station.
  3. Wire Device iq to WFM iq, and WFM audio to the Speaker.
  4. Start the Speaker. Press p on a node to pin it to the Rack.

Your first receiver walks through it. Radios covers other hardware.

What it supports

SDR-- is under active development. The decoder catalog shows how well each mode is tested.

Build and contribute

git clone https://github.com/Newspicel/sdrminusminus.git
cd sdrminusminus
python3 scripts/build-media.py
export FFMPEG_DIR="$(python3 scripts/build-media.py --print-prefix)"
pnpm --dir web install --frozen-lockfile
pnpm --dir web build
cargo run -p sdrmm

Open http://localhost:8080, or run cargo xtask dev --watch and open http://localhost:5173 for hot reload. cargo xtask check and cargo xtask test are the main gates.

The build guide lists prerequisites and every check. Read Contributing and the architecture before a pull request.

What is this?SDR-- (repo sdrmm) is a software-defined radio application for listening to, decoding, and recording radio signals. You connect radios, channels, and displays together in Patch view, then pin your everyday controls to Rack view.
Is it a desktop app, or do I use it from a browser? Both. It runs as a desktop app with a local SDR, or as a client-server setup where the server sits near your antenna and you connect through a browser — same receiver engine and interface either way.
How do I get it installed?Grab a desktop installer or portable server from GitHub Releases. The install guide covers macOS, Windows and Linux, plus Homebrew, Nix and Docker; a headless server installs as 'sdrmm' from the Homebrew tap.
Do I need a special radio to use it?Yes, an SDR receiver. The quick start uses an RTL-SDR dongle at a 2.4 MS/s sample rate; HackRF support is listed in the repo topics, and the Radios guide covers other hardware.
Is it ready for daily use, or still rough? It is under active development, and decoder maturity varies: the project publishes a decoder catalog showing how well each mode is tested, so check it before relying on a specific mode.
What would I actually use it for?Hobbyist and tinkerer workloads: tracking aircraft and ships, ham radio, pagers and sensor traffic, receiving images like SSTV and amateur TV — or just listening to AM, FM, SSB and digital voice.
If the server sits near the antenna, is remote access protected?Yes, but you set it up yourself: for remote access you are told to configure authentication and HTTPS on the server.
How do I build my first receiver? In Patch view: add a Device node for your RTL-SDR (2.4 MS/s) and a WFM channel tuned to a local FM station, wire Device iq to WFM iq and WFM audio to the Speaker, start the Speaker, then press p on a node to pin it to Rack view. A 'Your first receiver' guide walks through it.
Does it go beyond plain listening?Yes — it bundles radio tools like scanning, signal identification, coherent arrays, direction finding, and even passive radar, with spectrum, waterfall, and map displays for what it hears.
Can I record signals and play them back later?Yes — it records device IQ, channel baseband, and audio, and supports SigMF playback of recordings.
Can other tools control it?Yes — automation is built in via REST and WebSocket APIs, MCP, network IQ export, and event forwarding. A running server exposes Swagger UI at /api/docs and an OpenAPI spec at /api/openapi.json.
