About The Project

Desktop Mobile
desktop mobile

Lemmy is similar to sites like Reddit, Lobste.rs, or Hacker News: you subscribe to forums you're interested in, post links and discussions, then vote, and comment on them. Behind the scenes, it is very different; anyone can easily run a server, and all these servers are federated (think email), and connected to the same universe, called the Fediverse.

For a link aggregator, this means a user registered on one server can subscribe to forums on any other server, and can have discussions with users registered elsewhere.

It is an easily self-hostable, decentralized alternative to Reddit and other link aggregators, outside of their corporate control and meddling.

Each Lemmy server can set its own moderation policy; appointing site-wide admins, and community moderators to keep out the trolls, and foster a healthy, non-toxic environment where all can feel comfortable contributing.

What is this?Lemmy is a free, open-source link aggregator and forum for the fediverse — think Reddit or Hacker News, but anyone can run a server and all servers connect into one network.
How is it different from Reddit, exactly? Each server is run independently, but they federate like email into one universe called the Fediverse — so it is self-hostable and outside corporate control.
How do I run my own server?Deployments come with Docker and Ansible, and the full installation guide lives in the Lemmy Administration Docs.
Do I need powerful hardware to host an instance? No — the server is written in Rust with high performance as a stated goal, and it supports arm64 boards like the Raspberry Pi.
With every instance run separately, who keeps trolls out?Every server sets its own policy: site admins and community moderators can sticky, lock, remove or restore posts, ban users, and moderation logs are public.
Do I need to hand over my email or personal details to sign up?No — just a username and password. And if you ever leave, you can fully erase your data, replacing all your posts and comments.
Is Lemmy free, and who pays for its development? It is free open-source software under the AGPL license — no advertising, monetizing or venture capital, ever. Development is funded by donations and an NLnet foundation grant.
What can I actually do on Lemmy day to day?You subscribe to communities, post links or text, and vote and comment. Threads update live, and there is image uploading, private messaging, cross-posting, @user and !community tagging, emoji autocomplete, RSS/Atom feeds, themes and email notifications.
Why is it called Lemmy? The README playfully lists four options: the lead singer of Motörhead, a character from an old school video game, the Koopa from Super Mario, or the furry rodents.
What is Lemmy's tech stack?Rust on the server, built with Actix and Diesel, and TypeScript for the frontend, per the README's Built With list.
Are there mobile apps for Lemmy? The interface is clean and mobile-friendly, and the community maintains awesome-lemmy, a list of apps and tools for connecting to Lemmy servers.
