What is this?It is 'awesome', the original curated directory of awesome lists maintained by Sindre Sorhus: a hand-picked index of lists about all kinds of interesting topics, from programming languages and platforms to gaming, security, and business.
Is it one big list, or an index of lists? An index of lists: the README works as a table of contents — Platforms, Programming Languages, Front-End Development, Back-End Development, Databases, Security, Gaming and more — and every entry links to its own dedicated awesome list for that topic.
Is it still accepting new lists? Not right now: the repo's own notice says pull requests are temporarily disabled until the maintainer has a chance to catch up with the existing ones, so proposing a new list is on hold at the moment.
Is it useful only for developers, or is there stuff for everyone?Mostly developers — most categories are programming languages, front-end and back-end development, databases, and editors — but there are also sections like Gaming, Entertainment, Books, Learn, Business, and Health and Social Science.
Can I get it as an app or a website, or is it just a GitHub page?Just a GitHub page: a single markdown README you browse and click through. There is nothing to download or run — the value is in the links, not in software.
What makes a list good enough to be called awesome? There is a published contribution guide and a separate guide for creating a list, and submissions are reviewed rather than auto-accepted; the bar is genuinely great, hand-picked resources for a topic, not just any collection of links.
What does an entry actually look like? One line: a name, a short description, and a link. Under Programming Languages alone you will find lists for Python, Rust, Go, Swift, Kotlin, and dozens more, each leading to its own curated page.
How big has this gotten since it started? It was created in July 2014 and is now one of the most-starred repositories on GitHub with over 500,000 stars — the template and the name behind thousands of awesome lists on nearly every topic.
Are there other collections like this one?Yes: the README ends with a Related section pointing to similar meta-collections, and the index itself links to lists for whole platforms like macOS, Linux, Windows, and Raspberry Pi if you want to go deeper.
