Pure is a starting point for every website or web app. We take care of all the CSS work that every site needs without making it look cookie-cutter:

Get Started

Check out the Get Started page for more information.

Build From Source

Optionally, you can build Pure from its source on Github. To do this, you'll need to have Node.js and npm installed. We use Grunt to build Pure.

git clone [email protected]:pure-css/pure.git
cd pure
npm install
grunt

Build Files

Now, all Pure CSS files should be built into the pure/build/ directory. All files that are in this build directory are also available on the CDN. The naming conventions of the files in the build/ directory follow these rules:

What is this?Pure is a set of small, responsive CSS modules you can drop into any website or web app: a responsive grid, styled buttons, menus, forms and tables on a minimalist, easy-to-customize base.
Is it one stylesheet I include, or separate modules?Separate modules — base, grid, buttons, forms, menus and tables — that you can take individually or as one roll-up. The whole set is just 3.7KB minified plus gzip.
How do I get it onto my page?Link the prebuilt CSS from the CDN — every file in the build/ directory is published there; pure-min.css is the minified roll-up meant for production. Building from source is optional.
Do I need to install anything, or add JavaScript to my pages? No — you only link stylesheets; there is no runtime JavaScript and nothing to install. Node.js, npm and Grunt are needed only if you build Pure from source.
If I link pure-min.css, will my layout still adapt on mobile? Not fully: the pure.css and pure-min.css roll-ups leave out the responsive grid with its @media queries — that ships as a separate file. Add grids-responsive-min.css to get grid breakpoints.
Which browsers has Pure been tested in?The README names the latest stable releases of Firefox, Chrome and Safari as the tested set; no other browsers are mentioned.
What's the deal with all the different build files?Names are systematic: [module]-core.css is the minimal structural base, -nr files are non-responsive versions, plain [module].css is the responsive one, and -min files are minified for production.
Will every site built with Pure look the same?No — Pure is deliberately minimalist: it aims to cover the CSS every site needs 'without making it look cookie-cutter', and its look is described as super-easy to customize.
What does Normalize.css do in Pure?Pure's base layer is built on Normalize.css, which evens out cross-browser differences so elements render consistently before Pure's own styles and yours take over.
