Introduction

Monica is an open-source web application that enables you to document your life, organize, and log your interactions with your family and friends. We call it a PRM, or Personal Relationship Management. Imagine a CRM—a commonly used tool by sales teams in the corporate world—for your friends and family.

Features

Who is it for?

This project is for people who want to document their lives and those who have difficulty remembering details about the lives of people they care about.

We’ve also had a lot of positive reviews from people with Asperger syndrome, Alzheimer’s disease, and introverts who use our app every day.

What Monica isn’t

Contribute

Do you want to lend a hand? That’s great! We accept contributions from everyone, regardless of form.

Here are some of the things you can do to help.

Contribute as a community

Contribute as a developer

Principles, vision, goals and strategy

We want to use technology in a way that does not harm human relationships, unlike big social networks.

Principles

Monica has a few principles.

Vision

Monica’s vision is to help people have more meaningful relationships.

Goals

We want to provide a platform that is:

Why Open Source?

Why is Monica open source? Is it risky? Could someone steal my code and use it to start a for-profit business that could hurt my own? Why reveal our strategy to the world? We’ve already received these kinds of questions in our emails.

The answer is simple: yes, you can fork Monica and create a competing project, make money from it (even if the license is not ideal for that) and we won’t be aware. But that’s okay, we don’t mind.

We wanted to open source Monica for several reasons:

Patreon

You can support the development of Monica on Patreon. Thanks for your help.

Our team is made of two core members:

We are also fortunate to have an amazing community of developers who help us greatly.

Thank you, open source

Monica makes use of numerous open-source projects and we are deeply grateful. We hope that by offering Monica as a free, open-source project, we can help others in the same way these programs have helped us.

What is this?An open-source PRM — a Personal Relationship Management app. Think of the CRMs sales teams use, but for your friends and family: it helps you document your life and log interactions with the people you care about.
Is this an app I install, or a website I run somewhere?A web application, not an installable phone or desktop app: you run it on a server and use it from a browser. It is fully open source, funded via Patreon and paid subscriptions.
How do I get my own instance up and running?Self-host it: the repository includes a Docker Compose setup, or you can deploy it like any Laravel application. From then on everything happens in the web interface.
What does a server need to run it?It is a PHP application built on Laravel, with a Vite-compiled frontend and a database — a standard web stack, nothing exotic.
Is the version in this repo ready for daily use?Not quite — this branch is the beta in active development. The README points to the 4.x branch for the stable, current version.
Would this help someone who's bad at remembering details about people?Yes — it is built for people who want to document their lives or struggle to remember details about those they care about. The authors highlight positive feedback from users with Asperger syndrome and Alzheimer's, and from introverts.
Where can I actually use it — desktop, phone?Anywhere a browser runs — the project's stated goal is that Monica runs easily on any desktop OS or mobile phone, served from your own host.
Who can see the things I write about people in it?Only you. It is explicitly not a social network, users are never tracked, and nothing scans your data — it all stays on your own server.
Is there anything unusual about the license? It is AGPL-3.0. The authors are relaxed about it: they say you could even fork Monica into a competing money-making project, though they admit the license is 'not ideal' for that.
What can I record about each person?Plenty: notes, how you met, activities together, tasks, addresses and ways to reach them, their pets, plus documents and photos. You can also define relationships between contacts, custom field and activity types, and organize people with labels.
Will it remind me about birthdays and plans?Yes — reminders are built in, including automatic birthday reminders. It is deliberately simple, though: it only emails you about things you explicitly asked to be reminded of.
Can my partner use the same instance?Yes — Monica supports multiple vaults and users, so several people can each keep their own private space on one install.
Does it use AI to analyze my relationships? No — the README rules it out explicitly: no built-in AI or ChatGPT-style integrations, and no smart assistant guessing what you want.
