A curated list of practical Codex skills for automating workflows across the Codex CLI and API.

Give your skills real-world actions

Skills tell your agent how to work. An MCP Gateway gives it secure access to the tools it needs.

Composio MCP Gateway provides a single MCP endpoint for 1,000+ integrations with built-in authentication, team-based access controls, audit logs, and production-ready reliability.

Quickstart: Add Skills to Codex

git clone https://github.com/ComposioHQ/awesome-codex-skills.git
cd awesome-codex-skills
# Install one or more skills into $CODEX_HOME/skills (defaults to ~/.codex/skills)
python skill-installer/scripts/install-skill-from-github.py --repo ComposioHQ/awesome-codex-skills --path meeting-notes-and-actions

The installer fetches the skill and places it in $CODEX_HOME/skills/<skill-name>. Restart Codex to pick up new skills.

Manual install

  1. Copy the desired skill folder (e.g., ./spreadsheet-formula-helper) into $CODEX_HOME/skills/ (defaults to ~/.codex/skills/).
  2. Restart Codex so it loads the new metadata.
  3. In your next session, describe the task or mention the skill name; Codex will trigger matching skills based on their description frontmatter.

What Are Codex Skills?

Codex skills are modular instruction bundles that tell Codex how to execute a task the way you want it done. Each skill lives in its own folder with a SKILL.md that includes metadata (name + description) and step-by-step guidance. Codex reads the metadata to decide when to trigger a skill and loads the body only after it fires, keeping context lean.

├── scripts/ # Optional: helper scripts for deterministic steps
├── references/ # Optional: long-form docs loaded only when needed
└── assets/ # Optional: templates or files used in outputs

Basic SKILL.md template:

# My Skill Name

Clear instructions and steps for Codex to execute the task.

PRs welcome. Add real, reusable skills, keep descriptions precise, and include any needed scripts or references. If you add new skills, ensure the description clearly states when Codex should trigger and test that metadata fits within context limits.

What is this?A curated list of practical Codex skills: modular instruction bundles that teach the Codex CLI and API how to automate real workflows, from PR reviews to meeting notes.
So is this just a reading list, or do the skills actually plug into Codex? Both. Each entry is a skill folder with a SKILL.md that you install into $CODEXHOME/skills (default ~/.codex/skills); the list itself is the index of what is worth installing.
How do I install a skill from the list?Use the skill installer script: python3 ~/.codex/skills/.system/skill-installer/scripts/install-skill-from-github.py --repo / --path skills/ --name . Or manually copy the skill folder into ~/.codex/skills/.
Do I need anything besides the Codex CLI?For most skills, no. The list also pairs with the Composio MCP Gateway (1,000+ integrations with built-in auth and audit logs), and entries like connect/ and datadog-logs/ run through the Composio CLI.
Any gotchas after installing a skill?Restart Codex after installing or updating: it reloads skill metadata only on startup. Verify installs with ls ~/.codex/skills and head ~/.codex/skills/ /SKILL.md.
What can a skill from the list actually do?Examples: brooks-lint runs AI code reviews grounded in six classic engineering books, with severity labels and four analysis modes; codebase-recon mines git history for hotspots and bug magnets before you read any code; gh-fix-ci inspects failing GitHub Actions checks and proposes fixes.
Are all the skills hosted in this repo?No — several entries live in external repos (novel-writing, unslop, codex-sms-verification) and are pulled in with the same installer script, which fetches any skill straight from a GitHub path.
Do these skills work with other coding agents? Some do: polywave runs the same protocol on Claude Code and Codex, and unslop works with Codex, Claude Code, Gemini CLI, and Cursor. But the list itself is curated specifically for Codex.
