What is this?Apache Answer is an open-source Q&A platform you can shape into a community forum, a help center, or a knowledge base for a team of any size.
Is this a hosted service I sign up for, or software I run myself? It's self-hosted software: you deploy it on your own server and get a question-and-answer website with a Go backend and a React + TypeScript interface.
How do I get it running? The quick start runs it as a Docker container — the README points to the Installation docs for the exact steps. Building from source is the alternative if you want to hack on it.
Is it free to use, or is there a catch in the license? It's fully free and open source under the Apache License 2.0.
Does it have a plugin system if I want to add my own features?Yes — Answer ships a plugin system for developers who want to write custom plugins and expand its features, and the README links a catalogue of existing ones.
Is the project still active?Yes — it's an official Apache Software Foundation project with its own site (answer.apache.org), and its release CI still builds fresh Docker images.
