Intro

This list was originally a clone of StackOverflow - List of Freely Available Programming Books with contributions from Karan Bhangui and George Stocker.

The list was moved to GitHub by Victor Felder for collaborative updating and maintenance. It has grown to become one of GitHub's most popular repositories.

Searching Database…

What is this?It is a huge, community-maintained list of freely available programming books and other learning resources in many human languages; it started as a clone of a famous StackOverflow list and has grown to become one of GitHub's most popular repositories.
Is it a book itself, or a directory of links?A directory: it lists books and other resources grouped by genres — Books (English titles split 'By Programming Language' and 'By Subject'), Cheat Sheets, Free Online Courses, Interactive Programming Resources, Problem Sets and Competitive Programming, Podcasts and Screencasts, and Programming Playgrounds.
Will every link in the list actually still work?No README can promise that for hundreds of external links, but the repo runs an automated URL-checking workflow in CI (check-urls.yml), so dead links get flagged over time; still expect an occasional stale entry and treat the list as pointers, not hosted content.
Is everything in English, or are there other languages too?English is only the beginning: besides the English book lists there are dedicated sections for dozens of other languages — Arabic, Bengali, Bulgarian, Burmese, Chinese, Czech, Danish, Dutch and many more, up to Ukrainian, Urdu and Vietnamese — and courses, podcasts, interactive resources and playgrounds are also split by language.
Do I have to read it as raw Markdown on GitHub?No — the page is available as an easy-to-read website and you can search the list as well, so browsing genres and languages in a browser is the intended way to use it.
Can I reuse the list itself, say on my own site?Yes — each file included in the repository is licensed under the CC BY License (CC-BY-4.0 on GitHub), so you can share and adapt it with attribution.
How many languages does the list cover? The Books section alone has non-English lists for more than 40 languages, from Arabic, Azerbaijani and Bengali through Chinese, Persian and Russian to Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu and Vietnamese; courses, podcasts, interactive resources and playgrounds are grouped by language too.
Where should a beginner start? In the Books section: English titles are split into 'By Programming Language' and 'By Subject', so either pick the language you want to learn or browse a subject that interests you; non-English readers can go straight to their language's list.
Are the books really free? The list sticks to freely available programming books and is administered by the Free Ebook Foundation, a not-for-profit devoted to promoting the creation, distribution, archiving and sustainability of free ebooks; donations to the foundation are tax-deductible in the US.
